Five Star Rain Gutters

Five Star Rain Gutters “Loves” Its Newly Installed GPS Navman System

Second Generation Atascadero Company Approaches Its 30th Anniversary

The stuff that made this country great!

In 1985 Dave Kennedy Sr. sought a new business opportunity, opening his own shop specializing in making customized rain gutters. With a friend, Tom Butler, he purchased a 30 x 30 storage unit and started the business.

Now in its 29th year, family owned and operated Atascadero-based Five Star Rain Gutters Inc. has its own office building, fifteen employees, including Dave’s wife, a nine-man service crew, three estimators, and an office staff. With Dave Kennedy Jr. and its Office Manager, Melissa Kennedy Haydon completing the team, the company is in its second generation.

The company manufactures, sells, and services custom and unique continuous aluminum and copper rain gutters as well as galvanized steel. Five Star has earned a reputation among its growing residential and commercial contractor customer base as the “Go To” outfit to deal with.

Five Star’s customer base fans out from its Atascadero base to as far north as San Simeon, as far south as Santa Barbara, east to the California Valley—and almost everything in between.

Steady growth has marked the success of this company. It moved out of its storage unit and into its existing headquarters 10 years ago. And just four months ago Five Star signed on with Escondido, CA-based A&D Technology Inc. for a nine unit Navman GPS system for its service trucks.

Reports Office Manager Melissa Kennedy Haydon, ”Everybody on my crew loves them. The guys read them and get all the messages I send them in regard in their routes. The girls in the office keep track of the crews in the field. And they love the units as well.”

“This is our first navigation driven GPS system, and it performs many services for us that we didn’t have before--such as instantly knowing where our crews, assuring that they are on-time with their appointments, and, on the occasion when it happens, being able to reroute them quickly in case of emergency calls.” Melissa says the powers-that-be (her dad, mom, and brother) also love the system. I show them reports on a weekly basis so that they know what the guys are doing.”

Five Star Rain Gutters approaches its 30th anniversary with the same business philosophy its has had since its beginning. Acutely aware of its market, Five Star has seen competition come and go, says Melissa:” We are thankful for the almost 30 years and we also realize that we have to stay ahead of the game. It really comes down to customer service. That is what we strive for. You have to learn, expand, grow—and move with the times.”
